Bengaluru: Officials of BBMP report that the volume of sewage entering the Koramangala stormwater drain has decreased from 120 million liters per day (MLD) to approximately 8 MLD since the initiation of the K-100 Urban Waterway Project. Despite this claim, residents and businesses near the drain continue to notice a foul odor from the water and observe a flow of sewage-mixed water. The K-100 project, allocated Rs 175 crore by the government for redeveloping the drain infrastructure, addresses a 9.2-kilometer stretch from KR Market to Bellandur Lake. BBMP's engineering department anticipates project completion by the end of 2024.

As part of preventing sewage from entering the Koramangala Rajakaluve, BBMP officials have set up a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 5 MLD in Kumbaragundi near Kalasipalya. This plant treats sewage before releasing it into the stormwater drain. Additionally, concrete rings have been placed in the rajakaluve near Shantinagar to absorb and naturally purify the water. BWSSB has begun constructing a sewage treatment plant near Shantinagar expected to be operational by year-end to further prevent sewage from entering the rajakaluve.

Various enhancements have already been implemented, including the construction of retaining walls and ground-level bridges, installation of decorative lights, landscaping, granite placement, pedestrian walkways, and grills. Moreover, service roads have been built along both sides of the rajakaluve, along with pipelines to prevent rainwater from these roads entering the drain.

Initiated in 2021, the BBMP project aims to improve the overall condition of the Koramangala Rajakaluve.It was supposed to be completed by 2023, but it missed several deadlines thereafter.
